Giuliana Rancic revealed in October that she was battling breast cancer. Now the E! reporter shared a new bombshell– the double lumpectomy surgery that she underwent was ineffective in dealing with the cancer.
This morning on the Today Show, Giuliana and her husband Bill Rancic announced to Anne Curry that she will now undergo a double mastectomy, the surgical removal of both breasts.
She explained, “Instead of radiation, I’m going to go ahead and move forward.”
Looking at all options, Giuliana said that there were alternative treatments that would have caused early menopause. She and Bill have been trying to have a baby but she claims that was not a deciding factor in her treatment decision.
Rancic said, “To be honest, it the end, all it came down to was choosing to live and not looking over my shoulder the rest of my life.”
Bill was emphatic, “We were faced with a decision to make. This wasn’t a decision that was made lightly, we talked to as many experts as we could. In this particular case, this is the best option for Giuliana.”
She can expect an excellent outcome because the procedure will leave her with a less than one percent chance of the cancer returning.
Giuliana praised her husband’s support, “Bill has been the world to me through this. I couldn’t have done it without Bill. Even right from the beginning, when we found out we had the option about mastectomy, we went in the backyard and I remember, in typical Bill fashion, he pulled out a yellow legal pad and made a pros and cons list for the mastectomy.”
Her goal is to be “cancer free” by the holidays. Watch the Today Show video below:
