By now, you’re probably aware that Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have decided to separate after less than a year of marriage.
The news isn’t terribly surprising, given how many times the couple called it quits during their seven years together.
What is surprising, however, is that Miley and Liam’s latest breakup has been one of the uglier celebrity splits in recent memories.
In the past, the couple parted ways respectfully, and they did their best to keep the details of their separation out of the press.
That hasn’t been the case this time around.
Just one day after the breakup was announced, photos of Miley making out with Kaitlynn Carter of The Hills fame began to make their way across the social media landscape.
Almost immediately afterward, Miley and Liam’s split turned ugly.
He accused her of cheating; she accused him of rampant substance abuse … the whole thing got nasty in a hurry.
As the more famous of the two, Miley has the most to lose, and you might think she would be eager to sweep this whole thing under the carpet and move on.
But apparently, that’s not the case.
Miley has released a new single entitled "Slide Away," and many fans think the lyrics are her way of exposing the truth about her short-lived marriage.
"I want my house in the Hills / Don’t want the whiskey and pills / I don’t give up easily / But I don’t think I’m down," Cyrus croons at one point.
For obvious reasons, fans think the line was inspired by the Hemsworth situation.
For one thing, there’s the obvious reference to The Hills, the show on which Carter currently stars.
But there’s also the "whiskey and pills" line, which appears to be an allusion to Liam’s alleged substance abuse problems:
"She tried valiantly to save the marriage and the deal breaker was that Liam was drinking a lot and using certain drugs, and she wanted no part of it," a source close to TMZ said of the situation.
"Move on we’re not 17 / I’m not who I used to be / You say that everything changed / You’re right, we’re grown now," reads another line.
Miley began dating Liam when she was 17, and many insiders say the couple grew apart is became clear that they had different ideas about what adulthood should look like.
The song’s chorus goes:
"So won’t you slide away, Back to the ocean / I’ll go back to the city lights."
Many believe it to be a reference to the fact that Liam is from Australia, while Miley divided her childhood between Nashville and LA, where she still lives.
Apparently, Hemsworth never quite adjusted to life as an Angeleno.
It’s hard to believe that just over a week ago we believed all was well between these two:
"Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time," a rep for Cyrus told People magazine last weekend.
"Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers."
"They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy."
Thay may be the case … but something tells us there’s still more nastiness ahead for these two.
