Jerry Weintraub – the talent-agent-turned-producer who helped create some of the biggest hits in Hollywood history – has passed away at the age of 77.
No cause of death was given, but TMZ reports that Weintraub had been in failing health in recent months. The legendary mogul reportedly died at his home in Palm Springs, surrounded by family and friends.
Weintraub began his career in the early 1970s as a manager for singer John Denver.
From there, he branched out into representing acts as varied as Elvis, Frank Sinatra and Led Zeppelin.
Not a bad start for a gem dealer’s son from Brooklyn, but it was as a film producer that Weintraub really made his mark.
His resume could double as a list of the most beloved movies of the past four decades.
You’ll find Weintraub’s name in the credits for films as diverse as The Karate Kid (both the original and the Jaden Smith remake) and the Ocean’s 11 trilogy (which he both produced and acted in).
Weintraub was so active toward the end of his life that he served as executive producer on one HBO series that just premiered (The Brink) and another that’s set to debut later this year (Westworld).
Weintraub is survived by three daughters and a son.
