Just over a year ago, Rita Wilson underwent treatment for breast cancer. She received a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery.
Wilson took time off from her role in Larry David’s Fish in the Dark on Broadway to heal and recover from her treatment.
Today, we couldn’t be happier to announce that she rocked the red carpet at the Tony Awards on Saturday, June 7.
The Good Wife actress looked stunning, happy, and healthy at the event held at New York City’s iconic Radio City Music Hall.
Rita wore a black Tom Ford gown, which had cutouts at the collarbone and sequined embellishments. She had her brunette hair pulled back and donned drop earrings and peep-toe black heels.
Her husband, mega-celeb Tom Hanks, did not attend the event. Instead, she brought her stepson Colin Hanks to the awards show.
On Twitter, Rita shared a pic of herself with Colin, Tom’s son with his late first wife, Samantha Lewes: ".@ColinHanks , my son, and I @TheTonyAwards Just sat down! Great seats!”
Colin, 37, also posted a photo from the Tony’s, tweeting a picture of himself with Rita: "I got to go to the Tonys as this lady’s date. Much fun was had."
Wilson used her own story with breast cancer as a cautionary tale.
In a statement to Us Weekly, she said that she went for a second opinion after she was not feeling well.
She said, "Last week, with my husband by my side, and with the love and support of family and friends, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction for breast cancer after a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma.”
I am recovering and most importantly, expected to make a full recovery. Why? Because I caught this early, have excellent doctors and because I got a second opinion,” she added.
She continued her story by explaining her journey with doctors and treatment.
She stated, "I feel blessed to have a loving, supportive husband, family, friends, and doctors and that I am the beneficiary of advances in the field of breast cancer and reconstruction.”
“I am getting better every day and look forward to renewed health."
"I hope this will encourage others to get a second opinion and to trust their instincts if something doesn’t ‘feel’ right."
