The Real Housewives of Atlanta returns Sunday, and in this sneak peek from the Season 7 opener, we get a glimpse of one of the show’s biggest breakups.

Phaedra Parks and Apollo Nida have been the topic of great speculation ever since he was convicted and sentenced to prison on various fraud charges.

On The Real Housewives of Atlanta Season 7 Episode 1, we get a little behind the scenes perspective on how – and when – their union collapsed …

Phaedra Parks is divorcing Apollo Nida, and has officially hired a divorce attorney to make this happen as he serves his eight-year stint in prison.

Before she took that legal step, the couple parted ways on the morning of his sentencing, which he was not happy about, but she felt she had no choice in.

“It’s the morning of Apollo’s sentencing, and I’ve decided not to be at our house because of the people trying to snap pictures of my children,” Phaedra says.

For his part, Apollo feels betrayed and abandoned by his wife, which no doubt led to the epic fight before he turned himself in to prison at a later date.

“I’m not a murderer. I’m not a child molester. I wasn’t the guy on the corner selling cocaine,” Apollo says to the cameras, just hours before his sentencing.

"The charges I pleaded to were wire fraud, bank fraud and mail fraud. I got caught because a co-conspirator got into a bind and decided to bring me in.”

“I understand what I’ve done is illegal. It’s wrong. But it’s fixable."

His marriage? That has clearly proven impossible to fix.

Phaedra peaces out and checks into a hotel with her two boys, which she says is an effort to protect them, as her number one priority is to be a parent.

“As a mother, the biggest concern for me is to protect my children during this whole tumultuous time," says Parks, though Apollo doesn’t see it that way.

“My wife and children, they left,” he says. “And then woman that I thought was supposed to be there for me and cherish me, she’s nowhere to be found.”

Phaedra says she’s the betrayed one here.

“Apollo’s actions constitute the ultimate betrayal because I trusted him and I thought he was a changed man,” she says, and it’s sort of hard to argue.

What will go down when they confront each other face to face? We’ll have to watch The Real Housewives of Atlanta online to see, but it won’t be pretty …
