Does ABC have the next Modern Family on its hands?
Based on Blackish Season 1 Episode 1, it’s at least clear that the network has a modern family on its hands.
This critically-acclaimed new sitcom stars Anthony Anderson as Dre and Tracee Ellis Ross as his wife, Rainbow. They only want what’s best for their children.
However, their offspring’s childhood is very much different than their own, as Dre and Rainbow come to grips with two facts throughout the opening installment: There is a price to pay for giving their children more than what they ever had, and these loving parents are totally unprepared for the fallout. “Pops” (Laurence Fishburne), Dre’s dad, takes every opportunity to offer his old school opinion on family issues.
- There’s a hefty price to pay for giving their kids more than what they ever had.
- They aren’t ready for the fallout.
We learn here that Dre an advertising executive in line to be the firm’s first African American senior vice president; while Rainbow works as an anesthesiologist, is looking forward to Dre’s raise.
So, what’s the problem? Nothing financially, that’s pretty much for certain.
But Dre is taken aback by the fact that his kids will grow up in such a posh lifestyle… while it doesn’t help matters when Andre Jr. announces he’s converting to Judaism so he can have a Bar Mitzvah. Just like all his friends.
Laurence Fishburne is also on board as Dre’s father, someone with old school values.
Blackish is fresh and funny and tells a unique tale. Anthony is one of the few actors who excels at comedy and drama and this seems like an ideal complement to Modern Family as part of ABC’s Wednesday night lineup.
