Just like many celebrities before him, Kevin Hart posted a lengthy message on social media yesterday in response to Jussie Smollett getting brutally beaten for being gay.

Unlike many celebrities before him, however, Hart has a history of homophobic Tweets and quips.

And the Internet was not about to let the so-called comedian forget it.

Smollett, one of the key cast members on the FOX drama Empire, was harassed and then assaulted by two men in Chicago very early on Tuesday morning.

They hurled anti-gay and racist slurs at the actor, only to then wrap a rope around his neck and pour bleach all over him, after fracturing his ribs and injuring Smollett in other ways as well.

It was a truly horrific attack.

Shortly after news of this heinous incident went viral, Hart Tweeted the following:

“Sending prayers your way @jussiesmollett ….This is unbelievably sad.

Why are we going backwards….this is disgusting. We as people have to do better. WTF is going on the world???? Why are we falling in love with hate????

God damn it people….Choose love…I repeat…Choose love.

I will forever choose love and I will continue to teach my kids how to do the same. Stand strong brother.

Nice sentiment, we suppose, but here’s the thing:

Hart recently lost the job of Academy Awards host after the public learned that he had posted many anti-gay messages back in the day, while also making awful jokes on stage about homosexuality.

“One of my biggest fears is my son growing up and being gay," Hart once said, adding: "If I can prevent my son from being gay, I will.”

Har har? Not exactly.

This viewpoint wasn’t lost on Internet users, either.

“This is why someone’s jokes about beating their gay son were never funny,” wrote TV writer Ira Madison III, while filmmaker Sam Greisman, who is the son of actress Sally Field, agreed.

“But keep joking about beating up your kid for being gay, Kevin Hart!” he wrote directly to/about Hart.

Elsewhere, along these similar lines:

Poet Saeed Jones referenced Hart’s post-Oscars scandal interview with Ellen DeGeneres, who urged people to give the comedian a second change, writing:

“Given what we’ve seen so far, I fully expect the men who attacked Jussie Smollett to score a sit-down interview with Ellen at some point in the next few weeks.

"Maybe it will be a roundtable discussion with Kevin Hart.”

The two men who beat Smollett up screamed "This is MAGA country" at the star, according to various reports.

President Trump has not yet commented on the assault or this aspect of it, either.

The Chicago Police Department says detectives are investigating the incident and “treating it as a possible hate crime," while the FBI is looking into a death threat that had previously been sent to Smollett.
