Glennon Doyle Melton has opened up about a relationship that no one would have seen coming just a few months ago.
Including herself.
A mere three months after announcing she was divorcing her husband of 14 years, the popular Christian blogger has announced that she is dating U.S. soccer legend Abby Wambach.
Melton shared the romantic news via a smiling photo with her “new love” on her Facebook page on Sunday.
“Feels like the world could use all the love it can get right now,” Melton opened, referring (we presume) to the election of Donald Trump and adding:
“So today, I’m going to share with you my new love.”
"Her name is Abby," Melton continued.
"You might recognize her from soccer. She was one of the best players of all time, and she has been a fierce and committed advocate for women’s equality for a decade.
"And honestly? Those are the least impressive things about her."
About two months, Wambach confirmed to the press that she and her wife of three years, Sarah Huffman, were filing for divorce following an April drunk driving arrest that prompted the soccer star to confront her struggles with substance abuse.
“Abby is deeply sensitive and kind,” Melton wrote of the two-time Olympic gold medalist. “The kids call her an M&M because she looks tough on the outside but inside she’s really mushy and sweet."
Melton has nearly 650,000 followers on Facebook, many of whom were surprised when she and her husband split and most of whom most now be shocked that she’s in a same-sex relationship.
She has long been an outspoken advocate of marriage equality, however.
And she continued to gush over Wambach in order to explain this particular relationship.
"Abby’s brave. Not just with her words but with her entire being. She has never been afraid to be herself, even when the world told her not to be.
"I learn from her everyday about the woman I want to become. She is committed to her friends and family. She has this sense of country and honor and chivalry that feels beautiful to me. She cares about the vulnerable- children and animals especially.
"She’s unwaveringly good to Craig, to the kids, to Sister and to all my people. And oh my God, she is so good to me. She loves me for all the things I’ve always wanted to be loved for.
"She’s just my favorite. My person.”
In this Facebook post, Melton told her cadre of followers that her ex-husband supports her new romance and that she is doing in her power she could to ensure that her kids feel as loved as ever.
She understands what’s important.
“We are a modern, beautiful family. Our children are loved. So loved. And because of all of that love, they are brave,” she wrote, adding:
"When Craig and I sat them down to tell them about Abby I started by saying:
‘In our family, we live and tell the truth about who we are no matter what, and then love each other through it – and I’m about to show you how that’s done.’"
As for her general take on homosexuality, which many Christians consider to be a sin?
“Figuring out my stance on homosexuality felt like a life and death decision,” she wrote in a 2013 post on her blog Momastery.
“I know my Jesus, I love Him, and I think if he needed me to believe that homosexuality was a sin, He would have mentioned it."
