The Boston Fire Department has confirmed Malone’s death, writing on its official Facebook page last night:

"Sean Malone succumbed to his injuries this evening. [He was] surrounded by his son Sean, parents and siblings at Boston Medical Center."

The actor had been hospitalized and in a coma since July 20 after he nearly drowned after swimming out too far in his native Boston.

According to the Boston Globe, the actor was rescued by an off-duty firefighter named Chris Flaherty, who found him floating unconscious in the water.

The firefighter received assistance from a nearby powerboat filled with teens and told them to "get him to shore as fast as you can."

Once the group returned to land, Malone was given CPR and chest compressions from two other off-duty firefighters.

He was listed in critical condition under yesterday’s tragic turn of events.

We send our condolences to his family, friends and loved ones.
