Omar Sharif – the Hollywood legend best known for his roles in classic films such as Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago – has passed away at the age of 83.

According to a statement from his agent, Sharif suffered a heart attack at his home in Cairo. He had reportedly been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Sharif appeared in over 100 films during the course of his 60-year career, though he’s best remembered for three roles that will likely continue to be cherished by movie lovers for decades to come.

Sharif first became a household name in America in 1962 when his performance as Sherif Ali in Lawrence of Arabia earned him a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination.

Three years later, director David Lean cast Sharif again, this time as the title role in the epic romance Doctor Zhivago. The film was a massive success and cemented Sharif’s place as a silver screen icon.

In 1968, Sharif played against type as Barbra Streisand’s unscrupulous husband in the classic musical Funny Girl, once again proving that he possessed acting chops to rival his exotic good looks.

In addition to the indelible impressions that he left on generations of movie buffs, Sharif is also remembered as one of the world’s most accomplished bridge players.

Needless to say, the man packed a lot of activity into his 83 years.
