George Coe has died at the age of 86. The actor and influential leader of the Screen Actors Guild, passed away in Santa Monica, Calif.
Media reports say he was battling a long, unspecified illness.
Before his passing Saturday, Coe acted for more than 50 years of film, TV, stage and commercial work (he was the voice of Toyota).
Just as notably, he served over a dozen years on the SAG national board of directors, having the vice president title for two years.
According to Variety, he is credited with helping create the template for what became SAG’s first low-budget production contract.
Coe was also an original member of the Not Ready For Prime Time Players, the original cast of Saturday Night Live, in 1975.
He won acclaim for his role in Kramer vs. Kramer and was nominated for an Academy Award for the 1968 short film The Dove.
Coe’s TV credits included Star Trek: The Next Generation, Max Headroom, Murder, She Wrote, Judging Amy, The King of Queens, Nip/Tuck, Grey’s Anatomy, Columbo, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Gilmore Girls, The Golden Girls and The West Wing.
Most recently, he voiced the character of Woodhouse in FX’s Archer and the Autobot Wheeljack in Transformers: Dark of the Moon.
