Country singer Randy Howard is dead after an apparent gunfight with a bounty hunter in Lynchburg, Tenn., this week. He was 65 years of age.
The AP noted that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is looking into the shooting, which took place on Tuesday at Howard’s residence.
According to WSMV, a local NBC affiliate in Nashville, bounty hunters had been on the lookout for Howard following a string of alleged offenses.
Howard was wanted for "fourth offense DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a gun while intoxicated, and driving on a revoked license."
WSMV says he then missed his scheduled court hearing, which is why the bounty hunter was dispatched and showed up looking for him.
When he found him, things went horribly awry.
The TBI, meanwhile, says Howard fired off the first shot, and that the bounty hunter from A Plus Bail Bonding was also injured in the standoff.
"He said he wasn’t going back to jail," one of Howard’s neighbors said, following the tragic confrontation. "At least that’s what he told me."
Howard performed with big names like Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings and released his own album, All-American Redneck, in 1983.
