Actor John Hurt revealed today that he’s been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
The 75-year-old British screen legend is best known for his work in films such as The Elephant Man, Midnight Express, V for Vendetta, Alien and the Harry Potter series.
“I have always been open about the way in which I conduct my life, and in that spirit I would like to make a statement,” Hurt wrote on his website today.
“I have recently been diagnosed with early stage pancreatic cancer. I am undergoing treatment and am more than optimistic about a satisfactory outcome, as indeed is the medical team.”
A fifty-year veteran of stage and screen, Hurt has no plans to retire, despite his diagnosis.
He most recently appeared in Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary episode, and he’ll soon begin filming on Terry Gilliam’s long-awaited Don Quixote adaptation.
While pancreatic cancer is one of the most dreaded forms, known for its low survival rate, Hurt seems optimistic and assures fans he’s receiving the best possible treatment and curbing his famous "hellraiser" ways.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the legendary thespian and his family as we wish Mr. Hurt a full and speedy recovery.
