Just how epic was Game of Thrones Season 5 Episode 8? Consider this:

The latest installment of this HBO drama at last featured a long conversation between fan favorite Tyrion and Dany… yet this was pretty much forgotten about by hour’s end.

That’s what happens when Jon Snow heads north of The Wall to try and make an alliance with The Wildlings, only for White Walkers to attack in a crazy/awesome/memorable/emotional/scary battle.

It was one that may have even upstaged Blackwater.

One really has to watch Game of Thrones online to understand the magnitude of this very drawn-out scene, to comprehend the production value.

On a storyline level, Jon Snow (or Tormund, really) convinces many Wildlings to join him at The Wall in order to fight the undead enemy that threatens them both.

But just as everyone is climbing into boats, the White Walkers attack. Like crazy!

Jon Snow and Tormund join the fight, and victory appears to perhaps be in hand, only for The Night’s King to finally make his debut and unleash even more members of his army on the residents of Hardhome.

This legendary figure controls the White Walkers.

After Jon Snow and company make their way to the boats, forced to leave many Wildings behind (those alive and dead), The Night’s King truly comes into view, staring down Jon, taunting him and then raising his arms to raise the dead:

All The Wildlings who have just been killed have their eyes light up and – bam! – they are now members of his army. Awesome, scary stuff.

It sort of put everything else from the episode into perspective. It’s hard to even get excited about Dany and Tyrion chatting when we know what sort of threats awaits them.

But Dany decided to take Tyrion on as an advisor after he impressed her with his knowledge and counsel; which, unfortunately for Jorah, meant a suggestion that she cast him out.

Dany listened, sparing her former pal’s life. We then saw him offer his slave services back up to the man who bought him in exchange for a change to fight again.

Elsewhere:

  • Sansa got Theon Reek to admit that he did NOT actually kill her brothers.
  • Cersei was taunted by her captors to "confess" and forced to lick water off the ground. Her situation is rather dire.
  • Arya received her first actual mission from her faceless mentor. It centered around her poisoning some mean dude who gambled with the lives of sailors.

But this episode really came back in the end to Jon Snow and a truly epic battle.

How did it compare to Blackwater and other similar Game of Thrones moments?
