Kanye West hit the Grammy Awards stage for the first time in six years last night, and delivered a heartfelt performance of his new single, "Only One."
The rapper also made headlines for other reasons Sunday, of course.
In one of those moments that was totally surprising, yet not at all, Kanye slammed Beck’s Grammy win for Album of the Year, ’cause Bey deserved it.
Vintage ‘Ye. But so was this emotional rendition of his newest hit:
As all of the lights went out, Kanye emerged in what looked like a velour sweatsuit, under the glow of a single spotlight, to perform “Only One.”
The track features Beatles legend Paul McCartney, who didn’t join him on stage, but was shown in his seat just before the performance began.
The single finds Mr. Kim Kardashian singing rather than rapping, from the perspective of his late mother, Donda West, as she addresses him.
“You’re not perfect, but you’re not your mistakes,” he sang, relaying her motherly advice, and later, Donda speaks to Kanye’s daughter through him.
Kanye, as longtime fans know, was famously close to his mom, a professor who tragically passed away during a plastic surgery procedure in 2007.
“Tell Nori about me, tell Nori about me,” he croons, and even the most ardent Kanye haters may find it hard not to buy into his emotion a little bit.
While his name won’t be on the 2015 Grammy winners list, he was still a winner on this night, leaving fans wanting more as he faded into the darkness.
More of his live performance, that is. Not necessarily more of Kim Kardashian’s Grammy dress, although that did have its own positive attributes.
