Lena Dunham finds herself at the center of controversy again this week following some ill-advised comments she made about the Bill Cosby rape scandal.
Asked by Time Out New York if she believed her friend and Girls collaborator Judd Apatow is "obsessed" with the allegations against Cosby, Dunham replied, "It’s sort of like saying someone is obsessed with the Holocaust."
The actress and writer went on to clarify that she believes the situations are similar only in that the rape scandal is a "huge issue" that "deals with the way we abuse power," but many have deemed the comparison highly offensive.
Dunham apologized for the comment on her Instagram page this week, writing, "I’m already aware that comparing Bill Cosby to the Holocaust wasn’t my best analogy. With love from your special rape-hating Jew friend LENA."
Cosby’s controversial stand-up tour continued this week with the comic receiving a standing ovation at a show in Turlock, California Sunday night.
Cosby issued a statement last week, in which he informed fans that he is "far from finished" and intends to continue touring despite protests and a barrage of rape accusations.
For her part, Dunham has been outspoken in her support of sexual assault victims and in her recent memoir, she writes for the first time about being raped while she was in college.
Cosby is currently under investigation by the LAPD, but no charges have been filed against the 77-year-old comic as of yet.
