Kate Gosselin and her brood are back for an all-new season of Kate Plus 8! No, this isn’t an old post from 2011, it’s back on TLC, and … better than ever?
If you read celebrity gossip, you know Kate’s been all over it lately, even if this Jon Gosselin-free Kate Plus 8 kinda feels like a relic of reality TV yore.
She’s been dating Jeff Prescott and competing on Celebrity Apprentice, and is now back on her old network, too. Woman has surprising staying power.
Has she mellowed out somewhat with the passage of time? If you tuned in half-hoping to see Kate reach the end of her short fuse, you were disappointed.
Despite the arduous endeavor of wrangling eight offspring for a week-long vacation in Maine – with slow wi-fi and plenty of rainy days – she kept her cool.
Kate was downright sanguine and happy a lot of the time, showing hints of a dry wit and fewer of the meltdowns we’ve come to expect over the years.
The Gosselin matriarch can be a grating individual, equal parts domineering and phony, putting on a front for the cameras that would make Kim Kardashian proud.
Not so much in this Kate Plus 8 season premiere, however. Even at the low points, of which there are many when you have eight kids, she was pretty genuine.
Perhaps it’s the resignation that having eight kids and trying to be in control at all times is a fool’s errand, but she seems more content with the chaos.
In one case, with tree daughters arguing over this, that and who gets to sleep where, Kate didn’t bark orders, but told them to figure it out and peaced.
That’s not to say she’s lazy – she’s always planned tons of fun activities, on vacation or at home – but just that she’s realistic and a little less overbearing.
To many viewers, Kate will never be a prize (sorry Jeff), and she produced more than a few moments that will make you cringe in this episode, no doubt.
However, it’s clear that having eight really little kids and an unhappy marriage to Jon Gosselin made for quite a weight on her shoulders for so long.
Now that the kiddos are all a bit older – seriously, it’s worth watching just to see how they’ve grown – she seems to have come into her own a bit as well.
