We kicked off State of Affairs Season 1 Episode 4 in Panama, as U.S. citizens from the World Health Organization were attempting to pass out malaria vaccines among the sick in a slum hospital there.
Soon, criminals come in and demand the pain killers, but an earthquake hits during this robbery; a metal cabinet breaks in the basement; and, yep, smallpox gets released as a result.
Oh boy.
In D.C, Charleston Tucker gets awakened from a nightmare by a text. It contains a photo of a black handgun and the words “Bang, Bang.”
She heads to Nick’s after receiving it and learns he was sent the same text.
At work, Mo mentions the smallpox issue in Panama, but Charlie says it goes in the back of the book, pending a development.
In the Oval Office, President Payton meets with Senator Kyle Green, who warns her about a report coming out that has something to do with the Kabul attack that killed Aaron.
This politician seems to have some kind of history with POTUS and says something in the report could “hurt” her “gravely.”
Charlie then enters and mentions the smallpox and we learn that it’s American. The country left it there awhile ago in a less than intelligent move.
So a mission is put together to recover those vials of the disease, with Jack Dawkins leading the way. Charlie tells him the job must be kept as discreet as possible.
Charlie then meets some woman in a parking garage. She’s a friend sent by Syd and she places an infiltration program on Charlie’s phone, which gives her access to the external microphone of the person sending the text messages.
At a state dinner, Charlie orders club soda (no fun!) and the President tells Senator Green not to use her son’s murder as political currency.
MEANWHILE, the Panamanians have captured Jack Dawkins, believing he’s a spy. Charlie is tasked with freeing the hero and is driving home when Nick hops into her car and they start making out.
Also on the disturbing news front: That Kabul report has gotten out and Syd is frantically trying calling Charlie, who’s too preoccupied with Nick unzipping her gown to notice her phone.
At this point, armed men break the windows of Charlie’s vehicle, drag Nick out, put a bag over his head and throw him in a van.
Charlie is left with bullets in her tires and a message from Syd:
"The bullet that killed Aaron came from a CIA-registered weapon. I know for a fact that gun belonged to Nick Vera."
