Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin may be struggling to keep the embarrassing secrets of their divorce private, but their less famous friends are more than happy to share details of the couples’ long-deteriorating marriage.
Anonymous sources close to the couple tell People magazine that Chris and Gwyneth’s marriage was “falling apart” for years before they announced their split.
“They were physically separated and emotionally,” says one insider. “They have been on and off for many years.”
The source goes on to detail the ways in which personality and lifestyle differences influenced Chris and Gwyneth’s decision “consciously uncouple.”
Martin is described as “the kind of person who is always in a T-shirt,” while Gwyneth unsurprisingly is “much more glam.”
Naturally, of course, the couples’ differences go deeper than wardrobe preferences and one insider details the ways in which the stresses of fame and parenting eventually drove Chris and Gwyneth apart:
“They seemed to have a pretty mature handle on that crazy rotation of being superstars and parents,” says the source. “But that balance, given the time they had to spend apart, clearly couldn’t sustain itself.”
Chris and Gwyneth reportedly plan to evenly split custody of their two children, Apple and Moses.
