The Nicki Minaj pregnant scandal is over.
This hip hop star is not expecting Lil Wayne’s baby, so let’s all just move on, shall we?
To the Nicki Minaj single cover scandal!
The former American Idol judge released both the video and the art today for “Looking Ass N-gga,” with the latter featuring a photo of late civil rights leader Malcolm X carrying a machine gun.
The image itself was first published in Ebony magazine in 1964 – and many are shocked Minaj has reused it.
“Say what you will about his days as Detroit Red hustling on the streets of Harlem, there is nothing N-word like about Malcolm X,” Alvin Aqua Blance writes at HipHopWired, adding:
“To equate a man that literally died for his cause – the advancement of human rights for people of color – is just wrong on multiple levels.”
Many on Twitter share Blance’s consternation and criticism.
Where do YOU stand? What do you think of Nicki Minaj’s cover art choice?
UPDATE: Minaj has posted an apology on Instagram, writing:
“It is in no way to undermine his efforts and legacy. I apologize to the Malcolm X estate if the meaning of the photo was misconstrued…
The word ‘n**ga’ causes so much debate in our community while the ‘n**ga’ behavior gets praised and worship. Let’s not.”
