Footage of controversial Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson from 2009 has surfaced in which he encourages men to marry women who are young.

Like really young.

Robertson, who was briefly suspended by A&E for anti-gay comments he made to GQ this month, is back in the headlines for this new / old video.

The clip taken at a Christian retreat in Georgia shows Phil talking about how men should find a good, young Christian girl and marry her right away.

While he does encourage them to marry very young, he speaks from experience, and is not being as seedy as the bored media would have you believe.

“They got to where they’re getting hard to find, mainly because these boys are waiting ‘til they get to be about 20 years old before they marry ’em,” Phil said.

“Look, you wait ‘til they get to be 20 years old the only picking that’s going to take place is your pocket. You got to marry these girls when they are about 15 or 16.”

“They’ll pick your ducks. Make sure that she can cook a meal. You need to eat some meals that she cooks, check that out. Make sure she carries her Bible.”

“That’ll save you a lot of trouble down the road,” Robertson said, joking that you should obviously check with “mom and dad” first, given the age.

Phil Robertson married wife Kay when she was just 16. In Louisiana, such unions are legal with parental consent. They’ve been married since 1966.

His self-proclaimed “river rat counseling” is bound to raise eyebrows among the A&E brass, but is really par for the course for the Duck Commander.

This is Phil. Like it or not, this is what he thinks, says, does and shares.

Plenty of people will disagree with Phil’s views and lifestyle, but the fact of the matter is he’s merely encouraging men to marry young and stay married.

His four sons all followed his advice and are devoted family men.

Robertson has always been unfiltered, but the above thoughts on marriage aren’t exactly on par with calling gays sinners and likening gay sex to bestiality.

In this case, dredging up old footage of him that isn’t anything particularly surprising or controversial is just trying to milk more mileage out of a story.
