Insidious Chapter 2 scared up tens of millions at the box office this weekend as the critically-panned horror sequel bested the competition and then some.
Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer became the latest casualties of low-budget terror’s popularity as their comedy The Family finished a distant second.
Insidious collected $41.1 million, according to studio estimates.
Made for just $5 million, it became the latest horror film on a shoestring budget to vanquish competing movies with deeper wallets and bigger stars.
The film proved invulnerable to critics’ barbs, and the good fortune of a Friday the 13th release date didn’t hurt either. Here’s the weekend top five …
- Insidious 2: $41.1 million
- The Family: $14.5 million
- Riddick: $7 million
- The Butler: $5.6 million
- We’re the Millers: $5.4 million
