Despite her surprise move of resigning as Governor of Alaska last Friday, a move some called foolish if she still harbors grander political aspirations, a new poll finds that Sarah Palin’s support among Republican voters is still strong.
In fact, her resignation seems to have even boosted her among GOP constituents. A USA Today/Gallup poll conducted this week shows close to 67 percent of Republicans want Palin to be “a major national political figure” in the future.
That number would surely go up if likely voters clicked through our gallery of Sarah Palin pictures. Talk about an outdoorsy charm, and what a cute family she has!
Moreover, 71 percent of them say they would likely vote for her if she ran for president in 2012. “To political pros [Palin’s resignation] may be a problem. To the base, I’m not sure it’s a problem at all,” CNN analyst Bill Bennett said.
So much for conventional wisdom.
Just as Republicans as a whole are unfazed by Palin’s move, the poll shows Democrats and Independents are as unhappy with her as ever, as 75 percent of Democrats and 55 percent of independents preferring she leave the national stage altogether.
So basically, in the eyes of the public, the soon-to-be former Governor and Runner’s World model is still a lightning rod who neither gained or lost anything from this, and has her entire future ahead of her. Not a bad position to be in really.
